Matches in Jeopardy
Process
Each program may want to consider developing clear, written, step-by-step operating procedures for assigning a match in jeopardy, ending the match and re-matching. Those procedures may include some or all of the following:
  • Interview mentor - Make sure that the mentor has realistic expectations regarding the relationship, and that the match has been given a reasonable time period. Inform the mentor that it is normal for apprentices to test their mentors, especially early in the mentoring cycle. Check to see if the mentor has conflict in his or her life that may be contributing to the difficulty.
  • Interview apprentice - The apprentice may feel differently about the relationship than the mentor. Ask for the apprentice’s input to assess his or her attitudes and commitment to the relationship and program. Is the apprentice experiencing any issues in his / her life that might impact the match? What are his / her thoughts about how the relationship is going?
  • Contact other involved parties - It’s important to take time to get the entire picture. Other interested parties can often provide helpful information about the mood and behaviors of both mentor and apprentice.
  • Conduct an internal troubleshooting session - Bring everyone together to discuss and try to understand what might be happening with the match and what should be done. Make sure that an HR representative, or executive / center director for your program (or an outside option) is sought.
